CHAPTER 26

Garland was not a happy camper. The patrol car that was promised had finally arrived, and two cops had taken a look at the dog basket that was now nothing but a pile of ashes but had seemed strangely disinterested in his story, obviously thinking they were dealing with some kind of crank. They had been polite but hadn’t written anything down, which had made him suspicious that they were just ticking a box and weren’t going to pursue this the way it should be pursued. He had neglected to tell them about the ‘present’ he had placed on the Rudd doorstep since it didn’t seem relevant, and when they asked why he thought Dante Rudd would put his dog basket on fire, he had said that Mr. Rudd was obviously a bad man and up to all kinds of no good. He had also mentioned that Jasmine Rudd had had a baby without ever having been pregnant. At this point, the cops had exchanged a look, and Garland knew they’d just filed him away as another crackpot whose opinions didn’t matter.

He had watched as they crossed the road and had called on Dante Rudd. He had seen how Dante had exchanged pleasantries with the cops, and the three of them had laughed at some joke Dante told them, possibly in reference to Garland himself, for the cops had briefly glanced in his direction. It had made him fume. It had made him angry. It had made him feel that he was being pegged as a nutter and a silly old fool. Every neighborhood has one of those, and clearly, he was him.

Silently fuming as he watched the cops climb back in their patrol vehicle and drive off, he knew that his complaint would be filed under the heading of ‘do not proceed.’ And as he gazed across the street, he saw that Dante Rudd stood staring back at him, a malevolent look on his face. Then the man slid his index finger across his throat in a gesture that chilled Garland to the core.

He quickly picked up Quickie and hugged her close.

“The bad man isn’t going to get us, Quickie,” he whispered.

Though truth be told, he knew that these were empty words.

Which is why, for the first time in the eighteen years since he had moved into Stanwyck Street 89, he wondered if he shouldn’t sell the place and move away.
